"True Season of Love"

Excerpts

 Location of story:  Paris, France

From Chapter 1

Someone announced the auction had begun in the ballroom. Olivia searched the crowd for Connie. The music stopped and people gathered around an area cordoned off. A tall, reedy man, dressed as a Vulcan, spoke from a microphone requesting silence. Ignoring him, a woman laughed aloud as a man whispered in her ear, couples giggled, kissed, and groped, and a man goosed a woman in a tutu.

Olivia glanced at the throng who hid behind their masks. An aroma of cigars and cigarettes mixed with cloying and musky perfumes, produced an unsettling feeling in her stomach. With a shaky hand over her mouth, she quelled the need to retch.

As she continued to search the crowd for Connie, the man dressed as a hunchback came and stood beside her. He seized her hands and caressed their softness. Momentarily, they stared at each other in silence. Then she slowly removed her hands and walked away. Later, he would outbid all others and win the chance to dine with Olivia and Connie.

...confidence was in knowing this drama was a one-night stand, thought Olivia. She would give her all to this performance and reveal nothing of herself to this handsome stranger.

Never, thought Olivia, would she feel this way again. She clung to him like this was the last time she would be in his arms. It was like no other night.

Nothing was left untouched. Each finger of Olivia's hands and the gaps between her fingers he kissed and licked.

...like a Venus flytrap, he felt himself drawn in with no escape. "You are so beautiful," he murmured. "Even with your mask, I'm enchanted."

He placed a note in the bathroom that read: "In the morning, I want to eat breakfast with you. I know nothing, and I want to know everything about you. I want to know everything there is to know..."  Olivia smiled, folded the note and slipped it inside her shoe.

From Chapter 7

Ptolemy had a typical Parisian three-bedroom apartment, on a small, quiet street, decorated in an eclectic style of modern and antique, warm Mediterranean colors.

A wall decorated with blades caught Olivia's eye. Fascinated, Olivia stood and walked over to the wall.

Ptolemy watched as Olivia inspected his blades. He walked up behind her, placed his arms around her waist, and kissed the nape of her neck. He then pointed to his favorites: Mabo throwing blades and Mangbetu with its ivory handle from the Congo, Japanese Katanas and Wakizashis, Arabian scimitars, and rapiers from Spain. Briefly, he discussed sword making.

"Swords symbolize violence, punishment, or phallicism," Olivia whispered, as she caressed Ptolemy's back and kissed him.

Ptolemy let out a hearty laugh. Tears welled in his eyes. He grabbed Olivia's face in his hands, gave her a quick kiss, and said, "Phallicism? I assure you I don't worship my reproductive organs, but I do believe in procreation."

Lovemaking had never been so good or felt so intense for him. He had fallen in love with her.

From Chapter 8

Ptolemy hugged her tight and kissed Olivia's nose. He didn't care about her fears; it was not the whole of her personality. She was like a cake—a delicious, sweet mocha-cream cake that he hoped to taste bit by bit, and discover every segment, every little crumb that made up the whole of Olivia.

From Chapter 11

In actuality, Eleni had resented Olivia's success...She hadn't realized Olivia would sleep with her brother or his obvious desire for her.

From Chapter 13

Secrets that Olivia thought had died long ago ascended on her. Secrets that arose from their tomb would destroy her new life...

Ptolemy had gotten under Olivia's skin, seeped into the recesses of her mind, and made a groove in the hiding place of her heart.

From Chapter 14

"Olivia, you have a man in your life that loves, respects, and understands you. He wants to build your self-esteem in the relationship, not tear it down. You have admitted that he is affectionate, and when you make love, it has been satisfying and spontaneous, creative, and even playful," Hana said, smiling. "He must be a very endearing man."

From Chapter 19

Michel quickly deduced that Olivia had made a big difference in the company. Olivia made everyone look good. She was bold and self-confident in the boardroom. He wondered what she was like outside.

From Chapter 22

Connie hoped her eyes didn't betray her envy for her sister. She wanted someone to love her with the passion Ptolemy had for Livy.

...Connie's mind crossed on Ptolemy again. In secret, she wanted him. Damn he was fine! Ptolemy was rich, sexy, smart, sexy, hot, sexy, and good in bed, sexy. She discovered the latter from his former playmate, Majelle. Ptolemy pleasured Olivia in ways even Connie couldn't imagine.

...Olivia was shocked. She stared at Connie's engagement ring. She knew Connie didn't love Al.  There's more to marriage than four bare legs in a bed, thought Olivia.

From Chapter 39

"What are you hiding behind your mantle of self-righteousness," Ptolemy asked, angrily.

His aunt sobbed, unleashing years of pain and unhappiness. A pall of secrecy had enveloped her for too long.
